Location
The Gaspé Area
The Town of Gaspé is located at the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula in the eastern part of the province of Québec. It is said that the name of the town is derived from the Mi'kmaq word ‘Gespeg’, meaning land’s end. Gaspé has a town center but is also comprised of several smaller villages and communities situated along the lengthy coastline. Latest figures list the total population of the town at 15,269 inhabitants.
Originally famous for its fishery, dried and salted cod (Gaspé Cure) was shipped to places like Spain, Italy and Brazil for hundreds of years. Today commercial fishing is still important to the region, along with forestry, the wind power industry, tourism and of course salmon fishing.
The Forillon National Park has great walking trails with beautiful seascapes and is very accessible from the Saint John Salmon Club. You may also be interested in visiting the scenic village of Percé and Bonaventure Island. The small island is a short ferry ride away from Percé and has one of the largest bird sanctuaries in the world.
